Killarney Landfill Leachate Collection and Treatment System

The Municipality has applied for approval of a landfill site expansion as required by the Environmental Compliance Approval (ECA) issued by the Ministry of the Environment (MOE). One of the conditions included in the ECA is that the municipality install a leachate collection and treatment system. A number of alternatives such as a constructed treatment plant were considered in addition to the design submitted for approval. This system included an installed leachate collection piping system and construction of a treatment lagoon within the wetland with controlled discharge. The municipality has submitted the design of the system to MOE as required and must commence installation following receipt of approval. The collection and treatment systems will be installed at the same time as required by the ECA.
