Description

Description

Opportunity Kingston General Hospital (KGH) is a community hospital affiliated with Queen’s University serving more than 500,000 people in south-eastern Ontario. The hospital is also home to the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario. In order to continue providing first-class medical care for the community and to ensure KGH retains and attracts the brightest caregivers, students, clinicians and researchers the Province undertook the redevelopment of the site to modernize the facilities. Innovations The project was implemented in three phases to ensure continuous operation of the hospital. Risks transferred to the private partner included schedule contingencies and construction financing. Results The KGH project, which was completed on-budget and four months ahead of schedule and comprises 170,000 square feet of new construction and more than 143,000 square feet of renovation. The project included the expansion of the Level 3 Intensive Care Unit from 21 beds to 33 beds and the creation of a new unit for 32 medical-surgical beds with more single and isolation rooms than has been typical in existing units. Expansion and renovation of the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario, which nearly doubled the square footage, included: The addition of two radiation bunkers to increase treatment capacity; Increasing the number of chemotherapy treatment chairs from 15 to 39; and A specialized clinic area for pediatric patients. A new, expanded 40-station kidney dialysis unit provides enhanced comfort, privacy and dignity. A new mental health unit features an adult unit, child and adolescent unit, and intensive observation area as well as a spacious lounge and activities area. The redevelopment has resulted in a more family oriented environment, and by increasing services, more patients will have better access to the care they need close to home. The expansion will allow the Cancer Centre to meet current patient volumes and expected volumes for years to come. The Central Processing Services (CPS)— a key support to surgical services which cleans, decontaminates, sterilizes and assembles reusable instrument sets and patient care items—was expanded and upgraded. CPS processes approximately 50,000 instrument trays per year. At the peak of construction there were approximately 175 workers on site daily, 90 per cent of which were local.
