Description
Description | The Government of Kiribati is planning an overarching development approach for Kiritimati Island, known as the Kiritimati Island Economic Development Program (KIEDP). The Kiribati Kiritimati Infrastructure Project (KKIP) is the first project proposed under the KIEDP platform, consisting of “no-regret” foundational infrastructure for transport connectivity. It is aligned with the Government’s development priorities as documented in the Kiribati 20 Year Vision for the period 2026-2036 (KV20). Kiritimati Island holds potential to become an engine of economic growth and prosperity for Kiribati in the forthcoming decade, and an option for internal migration.KKIP will help to (i) mitigate economic isolation by encouraging regional and global integration; and (ii) build resilience against external shocks. These areas are especially pressing, noting that Kiribati is among the most remote and geographically isolated island countries. Component 1 for Safe and Resilient Regional Infrastructure, will improve climate resilience, safety, and security of aviation equipment needed for Cassidy International Airport (CXI) on Kiritimati island and Bonriki International Airport (TRW) on South Tarawa; and improve the resilience and safety of airside infrastructure at CXI, and the CXI airport precinct and airport connection roads. Component 2 for Safe and Climate Resilient National Connectivity, will rehabilitate the road between CXI and London and within the towns of London and Tabwakea, improving climate resilience and safety.Component 3 will support project implementation including the engagement of a Project Coordination Unit. Component 4 is a zero-value Contingent Emergency Response Component. Following an eligible crisis or emergency, this component would provide access to uncommitted resources under the project to cover emergency response. |
