Description

Description

The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) awarded a 30 year Build Operate Transfer (BOT) project to Navodigantho Water Company (NWC), a Special Purpose Vehicle company formed by Navodigantho Industrial Township Authority (NITA), KMDA and two subsidiary companies of Tata Enterprises (India) - Jamshedpur Utilities and Services Company Limited (JUSCO) and Voltas Limited. The scope of the project included construction, maintenance and operation of a greenfield water supply and sewerage system at Sector V, Salt Lake which is emerging as an important Information Technology hub in Kolkata city. The cost of the project is estimated at US $ 16.95 Million (Indian Rupees 678 Million). Of this, about 35% of the project cost, amounting to USD 5.93 Million (Indian Rupees 237.2 Million) has been funded through grants under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) program of Government of India. The balance 65% of the cost, totaling to about USD 11 Million (Indian Rupees 440.7 Million) will be invested by the Tata subsidiary companies-JUSCO and Voltas Limited. The land for this particular project was provided free of cost by KMDC As per the contract, NWC would create and manage a Water Supply System with a capacity to supply 13.5 Million Litres per Day (consisting of conveyance mains for treated water, pump house and underground reservoir and water supply distribution network of 16.8 km). In addition NWC would also construct and maintain a sewerage system with a capacity of 8 MLD, (consisting of a sewage collection network, sewage pumping stations and sewage treatment plant). NWC would be operating the system for a period of 30 years. While NWC will charge the users a combined water cum sewerage fee at Rs. 25/KL of water supplied, it will be purchasing bulk water supply from Kolkata Municipal Corporation at Rs. 5/KL. Nearly 80% of the customer base for NWC comprises Industrial, Commercial and Institutional (IT & IT Enabled services) customers and the rest (20%) of the water supply would be to domestic users.
