Information Ministry of Railways has come up with Kosi Bridge Construction Project with a ticket size of 516.02 INR Crores. This project in Railway Track sub-sector involves Laying of New Track/Bridge . The current status of the project is KOSHI Bridge -39 x 45.7m- is physically completed. Bridge No. 5 & 7 -OWG-had suffered during heavy floods ,their return walls got tilted & settled. .Scheme for temporary commissioning of bridges has been approved and rehabilitation work is completed. Now, it has been decided to first run traffic on existing bridges under speed restriction in Phase -I. In Phase- II, both the bridges No. 5 & 7 of span 2x45.7m OWG on well foundation each on independent diversion will be constructed.and is being developed through the contractual route. Economic/Social Impact of the Project This will give an alternate route all around the Nepal border. Right now, trains from the Northeast have to come down to Katihar and Malda to go anywhere in the country through what is called the ?chicken neck?. So it will also ease congestion in the ?chicken neck?,? said a senior railway official. The bridge will enable the opening up of the route through Darbhanga, Nirmali and finally to New Jalpaiguri from where the route to Assam starts.
