Description
Description | The Water Resources Department (WRD) has floated a 326-crore tender to build a new reservoir in the Kovalam basin between ECR and OMR in Chennai. The reservoir will tap inflows from 49 lakes through its catchment area and add 170 million litres per day (MLD) to the city's drinking water supply. The reservoir will be constructed in the Kovalam sub-basin in Thiruporur taluk of Chengalpet district, with a storage capacity of 2.5 tmcft. The work will be executed in two phases: phase one covering the eastern and southern sides costing 164 crore, and phase two covering the western and northern sides costing 161 crore. The project aims to store excess rainwater that previously drained into the sea and help prevent flooding in the area. |
