The consequences of demographic developments are getting more and more noticeable in the Nl and D border regions: double ageing, decrease in the younger population and the population as a whole. Facilities in small villages decrease, and with them also the quality of life of these villages. At the same time the identity, vitality and appeal of these villages are at stake. Problems with all these issues are apparent at both sites of the border. Within the KRAKE-project, all partners in the project, together with at least 40 small (pilot)villages from the ERW and the EUREGIO, will tackle the problems beyond borders and multi-disciplinary, with the aim to keep or improve the quality of life in small villages, together with social sustainability for the future. The needs of these small villages are leading. The focus of the project is on sustainable reinforcing of self-management of NL and D villages, with regard to the following six themes: care, housing, healthy lifestyle, child-friendly villages, Middle and Small Companies and volunteers, and the DNA of the small villages. Around every subtheme a community with pilotvillages will arise. In cooperation with the rural inhabitants, middle and small companies of the villages and the involved Universities of Applied Sciences, concepts for more quality of life will be developed and realized. A NL and D self-management book for all specific subthemes will make the transfer and applicability of the project results towards other small villages - also on the level of neighbourhood. Consequently the project results will be interesting for cities and other rural areas with the same issues. Differences in NL and D culture and social structures will result in learning from each other and in further removing the borders between NL and D.
