The overall objective of this pilot project, as part of the GEF/OAS/IDB biodiversity project for the Trio community of southern Suriname, is to reduce poverty in the indigenous peoples community of Kwamalasamutu by providing training and equipment for a community owned and operated eco-tourist facility. The purpose of the project is to create a cash income generating opportunity for the citizens of Kwamalasamutu, who have traditionally relied upon subsistence agriculture, hunting, and fishing for their livelihood. The project will take advantage of the community's abundant and scenic natural resource base and recently discovered archeological sites to promote and create a high quality and sustainable local eco-tourism industry.
