Description | The L train in New York City was the first subway line to get communications-based train control (CBTC) technology, which uses computers to automatically drive trains allowing them to run closer together at faster speeds. The CBTC system on the L train will reach the end of its useful life in 2028, nearly 25 years after installation. The MTA plans to replace the system's computer servers known as zone controllers with modern computers, upgrade radios on trains to wireless communications, and update software for both hardware components. The track technology itself does not need replacement. The upgrade aims to minimize service disruptions and improve reliability and efficiency. |
