Description
Description | Opportunity Lac La Biche County’s previous wastewater infrastructure was no longer meeting environmental requirements and a new long-term, modern approach to wastewater management was needed. The municipality decided to build a new wastewater treatment facility using a public-private partnership. The project was jointly funded by Lac La Biche County ($2.7 million), the Province of Alberta ($12 million) and the federal government through the P3 Canada Fund. Results The project involved construction of a new biological nutrient removal wastewater treatment facility with the capacity to service 15,000 residents; reconstruct lagoon berms; disconnect the existing forcemain from the lagoon; and rehabilitate/replace existing aeration equipment. The new facility responds to constraints on Lac La Biche’s disposal practices ensuring waste disposal consistently meets environmental regulations. “Our government understands that an investment in infrastructure is an investment in our future. P3s are an innovative approach to delivering better public infrastructure and ensuring maximum value or taxpayer’s dollars. This new wastewater treatment facility will help the County create and deliver a long-term, modern approach to wastewater management that is environmentally responsible, sustainable and safe for all surrounding communities.” - Brian Jean, Member of Parliament for Fort McMurray-Athabasca |
