The series The Countess of Monte-Cristo was born from a shared vision between Itinéraire Productions, Audrey Fleurot, Djibril Glissant and TF1, to produce a female adaptation of Alexandre Dumas' legendary novel, following the international success of their common previous partnership: the HPI series (sold in 105 territories and viewed over 300 million times worldwide). Our adaptation disrupts genre conventions by adopting the perspective of Mercedes Herrera, Edmond Dantes’ wife: she is the one imprisoned in the Château d'If. With the help of Abbé Faria, she escapes from prison to find a fabulous treasure and plots her vengeance with a band of underdogs driven, like her, by a rage for social revenge. We are confident that the female’s perspective of a strong IP and Audrey Fleurot’s international reach will allow us to attract a wide and young audience across the world. The series is coproduced by three European companies: a Czech production company (a low audiovisual capacity country), a French and a Belgian company. The project will take place all over Europe with technicians and cast of different nationalities: development in France, shooting in Malta and Prague from September 2025 to February 2026, and postproduction and visual effects in Belgium. In addition to TF1 and RTBF’s commitments, various broadcaster have shown strong interests in major European territories (Italy, Spain, CEE and Baltics…) as well as two major platforms. The financing of the project is supplemented by the sales agent and distributor Studio TF1, which will distribute the series worldwide. The Countess of Monte-Cristo is a genuine European project, through both its thematics, geography and production partnerships, and the MEDIA program's support is essential to fulfill this series' ambitious vision and transform this cultural treasure into a landmark European phenomenon.
