The La Insula Hydroelectric Project for Colombia will provide a loan to the Central Hidroelectrica de Caldas (Caldas) to cover the costs for the construction of a hydroelectric plant and the modernization and expansion of the Manizales distribution system. Currently, there is a power shortage in the Manizales area. Many local industries and commercial firms have had to install their own generating units to receive service due to the lack of power. The project will help to alleviate these problems by: 1) constructing a hydroelectric power plant; 2) constructing a dam and headworks; 3) building a powerhouse, step-up substation, and workshops; 4) installing transmission lines; 5) procuring construction machinery; and 6) purchasing materials and equipment for the distribution system. These additions will provide an adequate power supply to help alleviate the power shortage in Manizales and stimulate the expansion of industry and commerce.
