Description | ICE, the state owned electricity company in Costa Rica, granted Union Fenosa a BOT contract for the 50MW La Joya hydro power plant in 2003. Under the contract, ICE agreed to buy the plant’s electricity output through a 20 year power purchase agreement. The new plant was to cover approximately 3% of Costa Rica’s power needs. The plant had an installed capacity of 50 MW. It was located in the river Reventazon, in the Central Valley of Costa Rica 60 km from San Jose. La Joya was a clean development initiative in accordance with the Kyoto protocol. The plant construction began in April 2003 and concluded in June 2006 when it was commissioned. The estimated cost was US$ 95 million (80 millones Euros). |
