Description | La Plaza Esperanza is an 18,000-sf mass timber community center in Gresham, Oregon, designed by ZGF Architects. It includes office space, a bilingual preschool, youth programs, and a multipurpose room for community events. The building features a mass timber structure made of regionally sourced Douglas fir, cross-laminated timber panels, and glued laminated timber beams and columns. It is an all-electric building with a photovoltaic solar array offsetting 80% of its annual energy use and includes battery backup for resilience during power outages. The project cost $22 million and began in 2019 with extensive community outreach to ensure culturally responsive design. |
