The project involves an AU$5 billion (US$3.2 billion), 30-year transformation of La Trobe University’s 255-hectare Bundoora campus into a fully integrated, sustainable mini-city known as La Trobe University City. It encompasses the development of four interconnected neighbourhoods—North Village (residential-focused near existing communities), East Village (mixed-use with student accommodation close to Macleod Train Station), South Village (dedicated to research, innovation, and industry partnerships), and an expanded City Centre (the academic, commercial, and retail core). The masterplan will provide housing for up to 15,000 residents (including 15% affordable units), world-class facilities for 40,000 students, and high-quality workplaces that drive collaboration between academia, industry, and government. It includes modern education and research infrastructure, over one million square metres of climate-resilient green space, enhanced transport connectivity (with pedestrian paths, cycling links, and a proposed Suburban Rail Loop station), and a world-class sports precinct.
