Information Rural Development Department, Government of Sikkim has come up with Lachung Valley Protection Project with a ticket size of 100 INR Crores. This project in Storm Water Drainage System sub-sector involves Lachung is located in he North District f the state and very close to the inernational border. Besides rthe local population there is a large presence of the defence forces both military, para-military and the state police. There is a large river namely, Lachung khola which joins the Lachen khola to form river Teesta at Chungthang. The river is both rain and snow fed which has a number of glaciers on the upper reaches. There are a number of habitations along the river having very steep slopes on either sides. The river has been eroding the sides of the banks all along and poses serious threats to the people and their properties. In order to streamline and protect the lives and the properties it has been proposed to provide protective works along the river on either side. The current status of the project is -
