Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway Construction with Solar-powered AI Streetlights

The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is a 700km highway project in Nigeria designed to connect nine coastal states, unlocking trade, tourism, and economic growth. The project has faced funding challenges and delays. A new plan involves deploying 28,000 solar-powered AI streetlights called iLamps along the highway corridor. These iLamps serve as distributed AI data centers powered by solar energy, generating revenue by providing AI processing power to firms like OpenAI. The revenue generated is expected to help fund the highway's construction and reduce reliance on tolling and public funding. The streetlights also provide LED lighting, surveillance, vehicle recognition, emergency response, public connectivity, and environmental monitoring.
