Description
Description | The Lakach project involves the development of a deepwater natural gas field located approximately 900 metres below the surface of the Gulf of Mexico. The field has certified reserves of 847.9 billion cubic feet of natural gas. The project faces significant technical challenges including low reservoir pressure requiring artificial lift or subsea compression, and the lack of domestic deepwater service infrastructure in Mexico, leading to high development costs and execution risks. The estimated development cost is US$1.88 billion. Grupo Carso, led by Carlos Slim, dismissed the project as economically irrational due to these high costs and preferred onshore alternatives. The project has failed to advance through three consecutive development attempts and is currently under contract renegotiation between PEMEX and Grupo Carso, with no capital deployed or operational activity commenced. |
