LAKE CHALLA INTEGRATED WATER RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT PROJECT

Project Objective • To increase food security in the region through increased uptake of modern irrigation technologies farming practices to increase income and job opportunities for the youth & women. Project Activities • Lake Challa Water Resources Integrated project entails development of domestic water supplied (1,528 m3/day) to Kasaani in Jipe, Kidongu, Nakuruto/Kasokoni, Mwaktau Trading Centre and Kwa Mnengwa. • Provision of Water (9.6 million m3/year) for irrigation of over 2,020 ha of land at six sites i.e. Kilanga (200 ha), existing Challa Irrigation Scheme (200 ha), Nakuruto (90 ha), Timbila (200 ha), Jipe (930 ha) and Mwaktau (400 ha) for growing high value crops for domestic use and export markets. • Construction of water supply infrastructure for livestock, fisheries and forestry (500 ha) and Water provided for wildlife within the park. In addition, develop A Trans boundary Action Plan due to the shared water of Lake Challa with Tanzania and also in the implementation of the Environmental Mitigation Measures. • Implementation will constitute of three phases namely Phase One – to cover Kilanga Pilot Irrigation Project, the existing Challa Irrigation Scheme, Fisheries and Forestry, Phase Two – to cover Nakuruto, Timbila and Jipe Irrigation schemes, provision of domestic water within the areas covered by the pipelines, Fisheries and Forestry, Phase Three – to cover Mwaktau Irrigation Schemes, provision of domestic and livestock water within the areas covered by the pipelines, Fisheries and Forestry.
