Description
Description | Opportunity Lakeridge Health, with four hospital sites and three Emergency Departments, is one of the busiest hospitals in Ontario. The hospital serves more than 1,600 patients from the Durham Region each day. Lakeridge Health’s Oshawa hospital, home to the Durham Regional Cancer Centre, handles more than 82,000 emergency visits and 18,000 surgeries a year. In order to ensure the hospital’s continued ability to meet demand and provide a full range of services in a larger, modern and fully equipped facility the province approved the redevelopment of the Oshawa site using the Alternative Financing and Procurement (AFP) model. Innovations Aecon was required to finance construction of the project until substantial completion, when the facility was turned over to Lakeridge Health. The project agreement provided that the builder was responsible for all increased financing costs resulting from any builder delay. Results The redevelopment project resulted in an additional 20,000 square feet of space built over Lakeridge Health Oshawa’s existing facility and renovation of existing facilities including: Construction of two new floors for pediatric support, child and adolescent mental health inpatient support, and maternal program administration; Renovations of ambulatory maternal care, adult mental health support and administration, rehabilitation support, patient management services, and the maternal newborn program; Capacity for up to 216 new beds—32 of which have in-room medical lifts; State-of-the-art reverse osmosis room to purify water used in dialysis; Capacity for a forty-station hemodialysis area; More single patient and semi-private rooms for privacy and infection control; Isolation rooms to help reduce hospital-acquired infections; and Secured access areas for patient safety. At all times the hospital remains publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable. The public sector remains responsible at all times for the funding and delivery of clinical services. At the peak of construction, there were more than 300 workers on site, many of which came from the surrounding community. |
