The development objective of the Strengthening the National Statistical System Project for Lao People's Democratic Republic (PDR) is to improve the capacity of the Recipient’s national statistical system to produce and disseminate reliable and timely macroeconomic and poverty statistics in accordance with international standards and in response to user needs. The project comprises of four components. The first component, strengthening macroeconomic and poverty data development and management aims to ensure the generation and dissemination of macroeconomic and poverty statistics and services which can respond to the needs of the planning, monitoring, and evaluation of national development programs and its broad constituents of stakeholders. The second component, improving policies and strengthening implementation capacity will support a number of activities including: (1) strengthening the institutional capacity of Lao statistics bureau (LSB) and selected ministries and agencies (SMA's) statistical units to implement first component; and (2) enforcing policy and regulations on statistics and eliminating duplication of responsibilities between LSB and SMAs - reinforcing LSB's role as a lead coordinating institution. The third component, improving data sharing and access is aligned to the fourth pillar of the strategy for development of the national statistical system (SDNSS) and will aim to ensure that LSB (at national and provincial levels) and collaborating statistical units of SMAs (ministry of planning and investment (MPI), ministry of finance (MOF), Bank of Lao PDR (BOL), ministry of industry and commerce ( MOIC), and ministry of energy and mining (MEM)) implement an appropriate data-sharing and access to information strategy, backed up by adequate physical infrastructure and equipment. The fourth component, supporting Lao PDR Statistical Capacity Development Project (LAOSTAT) project management will finance goods, consultants' services, training, and incremental operating costs including secretarial support to the LAOSTAT project steering committee (PSC) and the statistical working group (SWG).
