Description | The Larose to Golden Meadow Hurricane Protection System is a levee project initiated to provide storm surge protection to South Lafourche Parish, Louisiana. The project involved elevating and expanding existing levees, constructing new levees, and installing drainage and pumping stations to protect communities from hurricanes and flooding. Construction began in 1976 after delays due to funding, land disputes, and environmental concerns. The system was 95% complete by 2005 and has undergone modifications and repairs, especially after Hurricane Katrina. The South Lafourche Levee District took over improvements independently after disagreements with the Army Corps of Engineers. |
