Las Cruces Heat Pump Cooling Project

The City of Las Cruces is implementing a project to install all-electric heat pumps in the city's hottest homes, particularly in low-income neighborhoods affected by the urban heat island effect. The project aims to provide efficient cooling to vulnerable populations, including low-income families and seniors, to mitigate health risks from extreme heat. Initially planned to outfit 130 to 150 homes over two years with $1.5 million in funding, the project has been scaled down due to federal funding being paused, now targeting 30 pilot homes in the first year and 40 in the second year.
