The Maryland Stadium Authority proposed to purchase Laurel Park for $48.5 million to transform it into a state-of-the-art training facility for thoroughbred racing. This purchase is part of the state's efforts to preserve the horseracing industry and replace the previously purchased Shamrock Farm, which was found unsuitable due to high costs and environmental issues. The Legislative Policy Committee has imposed a 45-day delay on the purchase to conduct a cost-benefit review and seek detailed cost estimates and plans for both Laurel Park and Shamrock Farm.
