JM Chair titled Leadership for European Local Development 2040 (LELD2040) is dedicated to testing innovative educational approach and related materials as a mechanism for improving implementation of the forthcoming EU Long-Term Vision for Rural Areas 2040 and improving its global impact. By doing that it will also advance interdisciplinary EU studies dealing with the phenomenon of EU implementation deficit, with a view to offer innovative educational tools (open learning, continuous co-creation of teaching materials, virtual classrooms) that could be utilised in other environments throughout Europe, to foster dialogue between the academic world and the society, including state and local level policymakers and to contribute to the awareness of EU long term regional policy visions, also beyond EU Member States. LELD2040 will put an emphasis on the EU Commission’s priorities for 2019 to 2024, especially on priority six, new push for European democracy, focusing on the development of long-term vision that will address pressing challenges and identify new opportunities for localities across Europe, as outlined in A New Strategic Agenda 2019-24. LELD2040 will be based on a) Open Innovation 2.0, an emerging paradigm where academia, policymakers and civil society co-create the future and drive structural changes, in this case also through co-creation of teaching materials, b) Open Source model, drawing from and contributing to knowledge freely available to the public and c) theoretical and conceptual background of Community-led Local Development, emerging approach that not only theoretically explains the mechanisms behind successful implementation of EU Cohesion Policy 2021-27, but can also be instrumental in providing the relevant empirical analytical tools to explain the implementation shortcomings of the EU visions and strategies. LELD2040 will engage a variety of target groups in its activities, i.e. academia, students, professionals, policymakers and civil society.
