Description
Description | In the Coxs Bazar district of Bangladesh, over 900,000 Rohingya displaced from Myanmar live in 34 overcrowded camps. Over half of the refugees are children and young people who have previously had access to educational opportunities through an informal curriculum. A switch to formal education based on the Myanmar curriculum (MC) was approved by the Bangladeshi government at the beginning of 2020, but can only now be implemented due to the closure of all learning centers as part of the COVID-19 protective measures. After completion of the planned pilot phase (for the second half of 2021), all educational activities are to be gradually converted to MC-based teaching by the end of 2023. The KWI measure (crisis management, reconstruction, infrastructure) aims to promote equal access to high-quality education in a safe learning environment for Rohingya refugee children. By introducing the MC and ensuring demonstrable learning progress, an important step is taken towards building structures and improving resilience. Key measures to achieve the goal include equipping and maintaining existing learning centers, providing learning and teaching materials, and financing teaching staff and their training and further education. By reducing access barriers, access to education is made easier, particularly for socially excluded children (girls and children with disabilities). In addition, teachers, community members, and guardians are trained and sensitized to child and youth protection issues (recognizing violence, referring victims to appropriate agencies) in school operations and everyday life. The project's partner is UNICEF. The target group includes children and young people aged 5-18, as well as teachers, guardians, and community members from the camps. The project is being implemented in 16 Rohingya camps in the Coxs Bazar district. |
