The project Fit4EU aims at making a relevant and lasting contribution for a successful, target-group specific education on the EU in Germany and beyond by means of four teacher training strands. A structured training programme, which is specifically tailored to respective target groups, will be developed, tested in two cycles in a digital and analogue (hybrid) format and systematically evaluated. In the end, key elements of the training programme will be disseminated in an optimized form to be used for professional teacher education, continuing education as well as for self-study purposes. The four training strands address teachers of different types of schools, including those which have so far been severely neglected when it comes to civic education on the EU, namely vocational schools and primary schools. By setting a special focus on language-sensitive teaching, Fit4EU intends to contribute to an inclusive education on the EU that dismantles existing structural disadvantages and promotes broader participation of future generations concerning opportunities and decision-making processes of the EU. With its English language teacher training strand, Fit4EU enables teachers to implement education about the EU in bilingual civics classes, connects teachers across the EU and disseminates existing approaches and material of EU-education transnationally. On the one hand, all training programmes provide the participants with both content knowledge on the EU and didactic competences using transferable, hands-on activities. On the other hand, they enable teachers to further educate themselves thereafter. By making target group-specific handbooks, content videos and didactic material (incl. simulation games) freely accessible in German and English language after the project’s completion, Fit4EU supports teachers’ life-long learning, which is vitally important and a prerequisite for successful education on the EU given the high dynamics of the European integration.
