Description
Description | The aim of the documentary is to show European audiences a lesser known aspect of world history. It tells two interwoven stories, connecting the personal narrative of an exceptional woman with the historical account of a Portuguese colony’s liberation. It is a little known fact that a Habsburg princess played a crucial role in setting Brazil on its path to independence. Leopoldina of Habsburg was a woman of contradictions - at home in two worlds that could not have been more different. The daughter of Emperor Francis I. was raised at court in Vienna where she had principles of discipline and an unwavering sense of duty to the House Habsburg instilled in her. She was then thrown into the tropical chaos of the exiled Braganzas’ court in Rio de Janeiro. Primitiveness and brutality, a hedonistic husband and his hostile mistress, regency and responsibility, coronation and humiliation, severe depression and isolation - these are the elements characterising Leopoldina’s life in 19th century Brazil. Katharina Heigl’s docudrama shows how two hundred years ago a European princess sailed across the Atlantic and how her iron will helped lay the foundation for the independence and economic prosperity of the largest country of the Americas. Leopoldina’s story is inextricably linked with Brazil’s history and by telling it we also tell the story of the country’s development from an exploited colony to a proud republic. |
