Lesotho rural solar electrification mini-grids

This project involves the construction of solar electrification mini-grids in eleven rural areas in Lesotho. The project company, Sotho Minigrid Portfolio SPV, consists of three sponsors - OnePower (1PWR) electricity access provider; the European Union funded Electrification Finance Initiative (EDFI ElectriFi); and the UK government funded Renewable Energy Performance Platform (REPP) which is managed by Camco Clean Energy. EDFI ElectriFi and REPP invested each the amount of $4.98m (total of $9.96m - 150million Loti) in debt and equity financing. Grants were received from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the Energy and Environment Partnership Trust Fund (EEP Africa), UK Aid, the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). OnePower (1PWR) also received a loan from the Open Road Alliance. This project aims at electrifying more than 20 thousand inhabitants (7,300 households) of the designated 11 rural areas in Lesotho. The Sotho Minigrid Portfolio SPV will sell the kWh of electricity at 5 loti ($0.33) to the Lesotho national distribution network. The total project cost is $9.96m.
