Description

Description

US hydropower developer Rye Development is partnering with utilities Louisville Gas and Electric Company (LG&E) and Kentucky Utilities Company to evaluate a 266-MW pumped-storage hydropower project in Kentucky. The proposed Lewis Ridge project in Bell County would be the first pumped-storage facility in the state and one of the first new projects of its kind built in the United States in more than three decades. The project, planned on former coal mining land, would use pumped-storage technology to move water between two reservoirs at different elevations, storing energy and generating electricity during periods of high demand. The project could provide around eight hours of storage capacity and deliver dispatchable power to the grid. It received a preliminary permit from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in 2022 and is currently seeking a final licence. Construction could start in 2027 with commercial operations targeted for 2031.
