Future-oriented building with ultra energy saving technology and irregular design LH New Head Office, the main building of the Korea Land and Housing Corporation, has been newly built in Jinju Innovation City, Gyeongsangnam-do, as part of the Korean government policy to develop provinces. LH New Head Office was designed with a concept of “Millennium Tree.” It consists of an integrated underground facility, a root of the structure, and several buildings of ground facilities which symbolize branches and leaves.Cutting-edge technology realizes irregular facade?The project faced a number of challenges from the beginning to completion due to the tight schedule and the lack of design drawings. However, Hyundai E&C could meet the planned construction schedule by adopting all the technologies such as the precast concrete method, high performance steel for main framework, the core wall construction method and digital mock-ups through BIM.The irregular exterior, which combines straight lines and curves in harmony, adds the aesthetic quality of the building. It, however, was a difficult problem to build the structure in a streamlined shape and achieve quality simultaneously. After benchmarking efforts and a series of reviews with the client, Hyundai E&C decided to utilize a system that employs free-form panels above the space frame structure and successfully realized the complete irregular facade.As no designs for irregular shaped canopies connected to X-shaped awnings were made, we had to do design and construction at the same time by using BIM technology. Even worse, since the construction process overlapped the landscaping work, Hyundai E&C had to reschedule each day in a more thorough manner.Amid difficult construction works and unfavorable conditions, our employees made all-out efforts day and night. As a result, we could successfully complete the construction of LH Tower in March 2015 despite the short construction schedule of 28 months. In June, the building was granted the highest grades in the environment-friendly certification and other required certifications.State-of-the-art, eco-friendly energy saving technology wins awardsLH New Head Office is recognized as the most energy efficient building among public institutions which moved to innovation cities around the country. LH New Head Office has 131.3kwh/㎡ per year of primary energy consumption, as much as 57 percent lower than 300kwh/㎡, the standard for the first grade of the building energy efficiency rating system.Our technological prowess in eco-friendly energy saving brought in good news. LH New Head Office obtained the highest grades in all the ratings for government-owned companies and obtained awards at the Korean Civil and Architecture Award, South Gyeongsang Province Architecture Award, Korean Architecture Awards and BIM Awards. As a new landmark in not only Jinju also south of the Han River, LH New Head Office will be an exemplary case of public sector relocation.
