Description | In 2000, the Chad government sold the nation's second GSM 900 mobile license to Tchad Mobile through non-competitive procedures. Tchad Mobile was a joint venture company between Sotel Tchad (51%), the national landline operator, and Orascom Telecom (49%). The company had established itself as the market leader with approximately 75% market share by 2002. The company operated under the brand name Libertis Telecom. Orascom Telecom's license also granted it the right to install a public payphone network throughout Chad's cities and villages. In July of 2004, Tchad mobile exited the market following a dispute with the Ministry of Telecommunications over the transfer of Sotel's 51% stake and some severe operational difficulties. According to Q1 2004 results, Tchadmobile had 32,222 GSM subscribers, representing a 39% share of the total cellular market of 82,620. |
