In 1994, a consotium of private companies, S.S. Istanbul Bati Yakasi Kumculari Üretim ve Pazarlama Kooperatifi, established a greenfield, merchant cargo terminal - Kumport Terminal - in the Port of Ambarli. The consortium was subsequently renamed Kumport Liman Isletmeleri (Kumport Port Services and Logistics Trade Co. Inc.). The Port of Ambarli as a whole has been managed by ALTAS Ambarli Port Facilities Trade Co. Inc. - a private company - since 1992. Kumport Terminal began to render general and bulk cargo handling services in the Port of Ambarli in 1994. It began to handle containers in 1996, when Arkas Group, through its subsidiary Limar Port & Ship Operators, leased a finger pier within the complex and established 'Limar Kumport Terminal'. Arkas Group reportedly made an initial investment of US$20 million in this facility. In August 2004, Arkas Group incorporated 'Limar Kumport Terminal' into Marport, renaming the terminal 'Marport East Terminal'. Since opening in 1994, Kumport Terminal has been expanded progressively. However, the amount invested in these expansions has not been publicly discolsed. As of 2009, Kumport Terminal had a total capacity of 1 million TEUs per annum. Marport West Terminal, formerly Soyakport, a new terminal in Port Ambarli, was incrporated in 2003 with a capacity of 500,000 teu capacity, at an estimated cost of US$85 million. An equal partnership of Fiba Group [Turkey] and Turkon [Turkey] purchased 96.6% of Kumport Liman Isletmeleri in May 2007 for US$255 million. Subsequently, Fiba Group bought out Turkon's share in the project company. As a result, as of end 2009, Fiba Group owned 98.65% of Kumport Terminal through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Fina Liman Hizmetleri Lojistik Denizcilik Tic. ve San A.S.
