Limondale Eight-Hour Grid Battery

Australia's first eight-hour battery energy storage system entered full commercial operation in southern New South Wales. The grid-scale infrastructure asset consists of 144 Tesla Megapack units located near Balranald, NSW. It is registered to charge at 100 megawatts and discharge at 50 megawatts, yielding a total storage capacity of at least 400 megawatt-hours. The system is designed to bank excess solar power during midday peaks and discharge it for eight hours to meet evening electricity demand. The project is backed by a long-term energy service agreement under the NSW Government’s Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap and serves as a blueprint for replacing retiring coal-fired power stations with renewable energy reserves.
