A megaproject to pump desalinated water from the Persian Gulf to Tehran to address the city's acute drinking water shortage. The project involves desalination in the south and transporting water over a distance of 800-1,000 km with an elevation gain of more than one kilometer. It is expected to take at least two to three years, more likely five to seven, to construct. The cost of water delivered would be $8-10 per cubic meter, making it economically impractical for mass public supply and viable only for specific industrial consumers. The project also faces significant energy demands and environmental concerns.
