Description | The project involves rehabilitating the 1,300km railway from the Port of Lobito in Angola to Luau on its border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, creating a vital trade route for critical minerals. It includes a planned greenfield railway link to Zambia and eventually to Tanzania, forming a cross-continental railway connecting the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. The railway is operated by Lobito Atlantic Railway (LAR), a joint venture backed by European companies, with strong commercial ties to China. LAR won a 30-year concession in 2022 to modernise, maintain, and operate the rail line, including a dedicated minerals terminal at the Port of Lobito. |
