Description | The Lobito Railway in Congo, originally built in 1903 and rebuilt by China from 2006 to 2014, is being used to transport critical metals such as copper and cobalt from the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the port of Benguela in Angola. The project aims to facilitate export of these minerals to break China's dominance in the region. The U.S., Angolan, and Congolese governments signed a memorandum in 2023 to accelerate growth in trade along the Lobito Corridor by reopening the Benguela Railway. The railway is seen as a strategic infrastructure to support the energy transition and economic development in the region. |
