Longshot, an aerospace technology start-up, plans to build a large ground-based pneumatic launch system in Nevada to drastically reduce the cost of launching satellites into orbit. The project involves constructing a one-mile long, 100-ft wide steel tube with a 3-ft interior diameter, equipped with multiple gas injection boosters to propel payloads at supersonic speeds. The system aims to use smaller bursts of gas along the tube to gently accelerate payloads, requiring only a small onboard booster rocket to reach orbit. The Nevada site is adjacent to the Tonapah regional airport and the Nevada Test Site, offering potential military testing applications as well.
