Low-cost Rural Technologies for Economic Upliftment

Design Innovation Centre of IIT Kharagpur develops design driven innovations pertaining to rural technology with the aim of providing developmental and vocational support with opportunities in livelihood and entrepreneurship which can improve living conditions of rural people. The key objectives of the project include- Design and development of machines and technologies for reducing drudgery and improving productivity- Improved machinesorequipment and technologies useful for rural industries and artisans- Capacity building and product quality improvement for rural and cottage industries- Increased employment, and entrepreneurship opportunities in rural areas Implementation of these Rural Technologies in various villages in West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand and Bihar have eliminated the drudgery in the life of many rural people and increased the production. In the process, the villagers have not only been able to increase their income but also to generate employment opportunities at village level- this has helped to reduce migration of villagers to cities in search of job.
