The proposed project would provide an efficient irrigation system with associated works including an extension of the main supply canal, distribution canals, drainage system, flood protection works, on-farm development, feeder roads and buildings. It comprises: (I) construction of: (a) new irrigation system, including 48 km extension of main supply canal, two pump stations on river Tigris, 540 km of unlined branch and distributor canals and 2,900 km of watercourses, and (b) land drainage system including pump station, river outfalls and 1,550 km of outfall and collector drains; (II) extension of flood protection embankment on the right bank of the Diyala; (III) installation of buried field drains and levelling of farmland; (IV) construction of 180 km of all-weather gravel feeder roads, and offices and staff housing for the administration; (V) agricultural, engineering and management services for the implementation and initial operation of the project; (VI) studies of additional processing, storage and marketing facilities required and of the recover of investment and operational costs; and (VII) maintenance equipment, vehicles and spare parts.
