Lower Negro River Mosaic Conservation Areas

under management

The Lower Negro River Mosaic is a group of 14 conservation areas established between 1980 and 2018, covering an area larger than Ireland. It is part of Brazil's mosaic system set up in 2000 to better manage contiguous or overlapping natural reserves and empower communities living there. The mosaic includes sustainable development reserves like Puranga Conquista, where communities engage in sustainable activities such as extracting oils and seeds from the forest instead of cutting trees down. The councils managing the mosaics include community members and government administrators and help tackle illegal activities while supporting local initiatives.
