Lower Thames Crossing Tunnel Boring Machine

The project involves the construction of Britain's longest road tunnel beneath the River Thames using a record-breaking 16.4-metre diameter tunnel boring machine (TBM). The TBM, the largest ever deployed in Europe, will excavate twin tunnels to create a new strategic crossing east of Dartford, significantly increasing road capacity between Kent and Essex. The machine will be manufactured in Germany, transported to the UK, and assembled at the Port of Tilbury before tunnelling operations begin. The project aims to double road capacity, reduce environmental impact by tunnelling instead of building a bridge, and achieve carbon neutrality during construction.
