Description
Description | This project consists of removing an elevated gravel bar in a side channel of the Tsolum River and using the material to build a new infrastructure setback dyke with 200m3 of rip rap armouring to eliminate the flooding that is eroding lands on K’omoks IR#2 near Courtenay BC. An additional 100m3 of rip rap will be used to reinforce existing rip rap on right bank adjacent to gravel bar. Surveys of the elevated gravel bar indicate that quantity of material to be removed is 4600m3. This material will be used to raise the elevation of two access roads to protect reserve lands that are subject to flooding, erosion, and loss of land. The land is also culturally significant as it contains many archaeological sites that this project will serve to protect from potential loss from erosion. Excess material excavated from the gravel bar will be stockpiled on IR#2 to be used for future erosion protection of an identified KFN burial site on IR#1 in the Comox estuary. This project will employ local excavating and truck hauling companies, and will provide employment for the K’omoks First Nation (KFN) Fisheries Guardians who will oversee the environmental protection and environmental monitoring for the project. There will be QEP/Engineers that will oversee the project. The lands immediately adjacent to this project that belong to the KFN and part of the land is a campground that provides income to the KFN. This project ensures sustainability of this business. |
