Description | On 27 Jun 2008, Brazil's federal power regulator, Aneel, held an open auction for 19 transmission lines and 20 substations. The lines were to increase connectivity between Manaus in northern Amazonas state to the national grid. The bidding variable was the lowest annual revenue. Spain's Isolux Corsan won the bid for two lots of transmission lines totaling 1,240km long and five substations under a 30-year BOT contract. The bids were: BRL74.3m for Tucurui-Xingu-Jurupari; BRL71.8m for Oriximina-Jurupari and Jurupari-Laranjal-Macapa in annual fees. The government approved the 30-year BOT contract in October 2008. In August 2010, construction permits were issued. The transmission lines to be built were: 527km, 500kV Tucurui-Xingu-Jurupari transmission line along with the 500/230kV Xingu and Jurupari substations in Para state; and 374km, 500kV Oriximina-Jurupari transmission line plus 339km, 230kV Jurupari-Laranjal-Macapa transmission line including 230/69kV Macapa, Larajal and Oriximina substations in Para and Amapa states. The sponsor created the special purpose company Linhas de Macapa Transmissora de Energia S.A. to lead the project. The total project cost was approximately BRL 1.953 billion (US $1.109 billion). In October 2010, Banco da Amazonia approved a loan for BRL 1.465 billion. The project was expected to become operational in July 2011, but commercial operations commenced only in May 2014. |
