The project includes excavation of the archaeological site and construction of the pavilion, featuring a below-grade section revealing the foundation of Lumpkin's Jail and above-grade exhibition spaces telling the history of the site and slavery in Richmond. It serves as the second phase of the larger Shockoe Project, which aims to transform 10 acres of Shockoe Bottom into a campus that reckons with Richmond's history of slavery. |
