Description
Description | Lumut Maritime Terminal Sdn Bhd (LMTSB) developed Lumut Port and the adjacent industrial park under a Build/Own/Operate/Transfer concept for a concession period of twenty years. Lumut Port is located mid-way along the Strait of Malacca on the west coast of Peninsula Malaysia in Perak State. RM80 million (US$21 million) was invested in Lumut Maritime Terminal (LMT), which was designed for geared vessels and could accommodate ships up to 45,000 dwt. LMTSB was a joint venture between Perbadanan Kemajuan Negeri Perak (PKNP)(30%), Halim Rasip Holdings Sdn Bhd (HRH)(30%) and Ipco International Ltd.(40%). IPCO was the EPC contractor for the construction of the Lumut Port. As of 2002, the venture was 80% owned by Integrax and 20% by Malakoff Bhd. By the late 1990s, the port was attracting power producer Tenaga Nasional Bhd. (TNB) to locate a 2,100 MW power station at the port that resulted in the building of the much larger Lekir Bulk Terminal (LBT). Part of the deal with Tenaga was the development of LBT for use by the power station. Some RM400 million was spent on developing LBT which was the largest bulk port in South east Asia. Under the first phase of development a 830 m berth was built with a capacity to handle up to a 200,000 dwt Capesize vessel. There were two ship unloaders on the berth giving an annual capacity of 12m tonnes of dry bulk a year. The terminal had 20 m natural deepwater meaning that no dredging was required. LBT began operations in May 2002 and managed to handle close to 1.4 million fwt of cargo in the first six months of 2003. As of 2003, Lumut Port had a combined capacity of 12.2 million metric tonnes per annum, with LMT having 3.2 million metric tonnes and LBT, 9 million metric tonnes. |
