Lunar 5G Wireless Communications System

NASA plans to develop a 5G wireless network using Wi-Fi 6 mesh technology to support communications for future lunar exploration missions. The project involves creating a compact Network-in-a-Box that integrates 5G radio access network, core network, and management software to provide wireless connectivity across the lunar surface. The system combines 5G cellular technology with Wi-Fi 6 mesh networking to extend communications beyond the coverage area of a single node, supporting device mobility and extended coverage through mesh relaying. Initial development includes laboratory prototypes, terrestrial testing, and planning for lunar deployment.
