In December 2001 the Lunsemfwa Hydro Power Company (LHPC) acquired the 20 MW Mulungushi power station and the 18MW Lunsemfwa power station from Zambia Consolidated Mines Investment Holdings PLC following the privatization of Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Ltd. The plants are connected to the national grid and sell power to Zesco (the state-owned electricity utility). LHPC was a joint venture owned by Eskom (South Africa, 51%), Degarnier Holding (Zambia, 29%) and Wand Gorge Investment (Zambia, 20%). In 2003, the project received a US$3 million loan from the Southern Africa Development Bank. There was no publicly available information on the initial project cost. In December 2005 LHPC announced new investments of US$500 million, to expand their existing plants to 55 MW and to build a new 207 MW station at Kaungwishi. LHPC announced further plans to expand total capacity to 314MW by 2015, most of which would be exported to southern and eat African nations through the Southern Africa Power Pool.
