Description
Description | A proposed project in the late 1890s to convert the old asylum building in Couchiching Beach Park, Orillia, into a luxury summer hotel for tourists, particularly targeting wealthy visitors from the United States. The project involved refurbishing the old asylum building and included plans for a wharf for steamboats. Despite multiple attempts by different investors and firms, including local businessmen and the Mackenzie and Mann engineering firm, the project failed to secure sufficient funding and was ultimately abandoned. The town council later decided to demolish the old asylum building in 1900 to focus on improving the park as a tourist attraction. |
