Description | The hydro power plant Machadinho is being constructed and will be operated by the Consorcio Machadinho, which is a joint-venture of Maesa Machadinho Energetica (83%) and Gerasul (17%). Maesa has the following ownership structure: Votorantim Group (30%), Alcoa/Camargo Correa (29%), the state-owned Celesc (15%), several other renown companies with small stakes and the municipality (3%). The construction works of the 1,140 MW plant have an estimated cost of US$ 514 million, and were started in 1998 (the concession contract had been signed on Jul. 1997). Closure was achieved in 2000 with a loan from the state-owned bank BNDES (US$ 157.3 million). Additional financing was obtained with a bond issuance sponsored by the BNDES of US$ 188.5 million in Mar. 2001. Commercial operation is expected to start in Aug. 2002. Consorcio Machadinho has a 35-year contract, after which time the power plant will be acquired by the government. The power generated by the plant will be directed to several cities in the region.
